November 28 until December 2, 2016, all 13 early stage researchers (ESRs) participated in the Glycan Analysis Workshop, organized and hosted by Ludger. The workshop included two days of theoretical training and two days of practical applications. Theory lessons were given on glycan nomenclature, release and labelling methods, chromatography, mass spectrometry and NMR as well as case studies exemplifying O-glycan analysis, N-glycan analysis of cell lines and MALDI-imaging mass spectrometry, glycolipid analysis, and analysis of biopharmaceuticals. Further, two external experts were invited: David Harvey (Oxford Glycobiology Institute) gave a lecture on ‘Structural identification of glycans by fragmentation and Ion mobility’ and Erdman Rapp (Max Planck Institute Magdeburg; glyXera) on “Glycan analysis using multiplexed Capillary gel electrophoresis’. The practical training included N-glycan release, LC-MS analysis and data analysis. On the final day, the ESRs presented their results.
